Stephen Balch, a member of the the AHI’s Board of Directors and founder and president of the National Association of Scholars, has received the prestigious National Humanities Medal.

In making the presentation, President George W. Bush recognized Dr. Balch “for his leadership and advocacy upholding the noblest traditions of higher education. His work on behalf of scholarship and a free society has made him a proponent of reform and a champion of excellence at our nation’s universities.”

Dr. Balch played a vital role in advising the founders of the AHI after its collapse as an on-campus center at Hamilton College.  We thank him for his many contributions to our rebirth as the AHI and congratulate him for achieving this high point in a most distinguished career.
